This is what happens when you don't set off with good equipment and knowledge maybe. But they managed to walk the few miles out which is quite difficult. Never loose your canoe in summer or dogs in winter.....

I think it was complete lack of experience and knowledge. Very lucky guys. The Canoe camp I spent most of my child hood summers ate in northern Ontario undertakes these routes in northern Quebec, Nunavut and Saskatchewan and has been for over a hundred years using the same design of Wood Canvas canoes. Knowledge is definitely more important than having an indestructible canoe. People tend to feel they can take higher risks and generally be a little more aggressive without planning when using plastic boats. A mistake these guys clearly made believing they could stand up to more than recreational paddling.

Wrong boat and wrong river to start with. I lived on the Churchill River in N Sask.
We portaged several really wicked places, even Otter Rapids was navigable.

Nature is wild and dangerous, although beautiful. Those two lucky guys risked a lot, it was really stupid behavior.
