German army pocket knife

Years ago I had a Victorinox Mauser - bigger than a normal SAK with 2 blades, a saw/screwdriver/bottle opener/can opener combination tool, corkscrew and awl, with green nylon-like scales. I lost it, but acquired a Bundeswehr pocket knife instead. This looked just the same but had only one cutting blade. It was also stamped Victorinox Switzerland. I lost it too, somewhere on the training area at Barry Buddon....

Although I owned them a few years apart, as far as I can recall, the quality and finish was just the same (ie, very high- as good as a SAK with stronger springs)

Both were great bushcraft knives (for a folder) - a bit bigger and more robust than a SAK, still legal for every day carry with 3" locking blade and a good saw. So I thought I would get another. (error - should read 'non-locking blade')

However, looking at the net, this knife is made by several contractors (some respected ones like Neito and kissing Crane, others I've never heard of) and there have been suggestions that some of the non-Victorinox are of inferior quality. So I paid a bit more for a Victorinox made one. I'd be interested to hear from others who've used these.

They can be sourced very cheaply from Germany (......obvious, I guess....) but postage is the killer. In the UK they cost about a tenner. A group buy might be possible but if some are a bit sub-standard that could be a problem. I see the Bundeswehr now use a different locking Victorinox, so I guess the old ones are no longer being made.

Seems the Mauser has gone the Way of the Woodlore and is now a collectors item.

"still legal for every day carry with 3" locking blade"

Bear in mind that locking blades aren't legal EDC thesedays (you need "a good reason")

I think the Vic Mauser is a great knife and I love the two blades but I've never been fond of the saw. It's too aggressive and difficult to saw with imo. The regular Vic saws are much more functional.

Yes,they seem to stick more than the SAK saws. :(

Really? The new GAK has a partially serrated blade which you would have thought was better.

I read somewhere that the GAK/Mauser saw blade was good on green wood. I used the saw pretty infrequently but found it good. Never compared it to a SAK saw though.

That is interesting, and what you would expect from Kissing Cranes. Has anyone had a lesser quality German army knife made by another contractor?

If they are all the same I didn't need to pay extra for a Victorinox one.

Hiya Doc,
They are not all the same.
Yes, I have a lesser quality Gak. It has MFH stamped on the blade. Definately inferior in fit and finish to the Vic' version I have.
The back springs though adequate didn't have the snap of the Vic' and are'nt quite as strong. After a few whittling tasks the main blade developed slight but noticeable side to side play :(
It's still functional and the steel seems okay and has held its edge well sinced I convexed it.

Got mine for a tenner too. I've paid more in the past for lesser knives. When ordering this Gak (online) the contractor who made it was unspecified and there are apparently around ten different contractors who've produced this model at various times for the German army. Other makers may be even better value, but buying unseen, it'll probably be pot luck as to which brand you get. Not really a problem if long term quality assurance is not high on your list. If it is, get the Vic'.

If a Vic' Gak is not possible, and size is not that much of an issue but quality is, I recommend the Vic' Farmer:

same thick spear point blade, better woodsaw and awl, strong allox scales. It does lack a corkscrew and is almost 2cm shorter then the Gak model, but is only a couple of quid or so more for the improved quality and availability. Vic' Mausers and Gaks can be ordered from America at approx' £40  & £20 respectively plus £5 P&P

I have a vic masuer pen knife as well, bought in in the late '80's. Have used it on many camping trips for gadgets and food prep, never skinned anything other than my finger!
Never used the saw blade, but as a scout leader the bottle opener gets a bit of use :D

Guys,

I'd be interested in buying one. I've been Googling the knife, and haven't been able to come up with a decent price for one in good condition, or a site that has the knife in stock currently.

Does anyone want to give me a hand? Please keep in mind that I live in Canada, and our exchange rate is horrible.

Thx.

A.

Do you mean the Mauser, or the GAK, addyb?

If the former, AFAIK the felinevet site is the only source, although they occasionally appear on ebay.

The GAK is readily available on ebay - search internationally for German army knife or 'Bundeswehr Taschenmesser' and many come up. In Germany they sell for peanuts - 5 to 10 euros but postage can be steep. Often they are new but the seller does not specify the manufacturer.

The mauser has two cutting blades - some sellers describe the GAK as a Mauser but it's not.

The Victorinox-made GAK really is a good tool and in my mind must be one of the best (maybe the best) UK EDC knives to have in the woods. The strong springs, 3" blade, woodsaw, combination tool, light weight, low price and victorinox build quality make it hard to beat. Having said that, the fact that I have lost a mauser and a GAK suggest that green handles are inferior to red :)

The alox SAKs like the Farmer mentioned above are also very good but slightly smaller.

No, I'm after the GAK. Sorry, I should've clarified.

Can anyone give me a proper URL? I've been after one for a while, but didn't know anything about them until I read this thread. The only problem is the exchange rate and shipping/handling charges to Canada.

Thanks Doc

A.
