for general beginers walks / hikes and occasional overnight are these really hand? or do they come into their own on longer more technical multi day walks?

Never used one, only compass and os maps, but not done that for a few years now...

I bird survey a lot on Ascension Island and have used mine only there (generally to mark locations). As a rule I only use a map for navigation and the GPS to check position on longer walks.
