As per my previous post, I have obtained second hand fur and am preparing for cold weather projects! My plan is a fur lined vest (arms free) and a pair of mittens for the deep cold/snowmobiling etc. My initial thought is a pair of fur lined mittens with either goatskin or waxed cotton outer shell. However, the fur out style also appears to be very popular in the nordic climate. I am currently erring towards the fur lined option for reasons of durability but would be interested to hear any other thoughts. This is a function over form project; practicality is king....

I would have thought fur in would be warmer as the fur would trap air next to the skin. That's why I find it puzzling that most people in cold parts of the world seem to wear the fur on the outside. Hopefully someone will come along soon and explain!

I have never seen an animal with the fur in. You would think that a few million years of evolution would have got it right.

(Fur in tickles)

A parody of Hiawatha says:
He killed the noble Mudjokivis.
Of the skin he made him mittens,
Made them with the fur side inside,
Made them with the skin side outside.
He, to get the warm side inside,
Put the inside skin side outside;
He to get the cold side outside
Put the warm side fur side inside.
That's why he put the fur side inside,
Why he put the skin side outside,
Why he turned them inside outside.

Fur out would guarantee full loft whereas fur in the fur gets compressed losing warmth. Also fur sheds snow and water better then the untreated back. Thats just how I see it so not gospel!

Before anyone else posts it:

On the outside grows the furside. On the inside grows the skinside.
So the furside is the outside and the skinside is the inside.
As the skinside is the inside (and the furside is the outside)
One ‘side’ likes the skinside inside and the furside on the outside.
Others like the skinside outside and the furside on the inside
As the skinside is the hard side and the furside is the soft side.
If you turn the skinside outside, thinking you will side with that ‘side’,
Then the soft side furside’s inside, which some argue is the wrong side.
If you turn the furside outside – as you say, it grows on that side,
Then your outside’s next the skinside, which for comfort’s not the right side.
For the skinside is the cold side and your outside’s not your warm side
And the two cold sides coming side-by-side are not the right sides one ‘side’ decides.
If you decide to side with that ‘side’, turn the outside furside inside
Then the hard side, cold side, skinside’s, beyond all question, inside outside.

Thanks for the poetry - I can safely say that I have never found being that confused so entertaining.... I think that Hiawatha liked the feel of fur....? Is that right??? The Innuit apparently like the feel of fur too? How am I doing...?
