I used some coil spring to make another little knife. Here are a few process shots....

Ths is useful. I saw a big knife made from a piece of BMW coil spring. Just fine but too large for my wood carving interests.
Half your length. Half your width. Big, wide tang with 2 holes for me to surface mount. Gimme a bit of a curve at the tip 1/4 of the blade.
Pacific Northwest native style carving knives and,
I'm your man.
Razor hard finish works well.

Yeah, great stuff goodjob

I'm going to expose my lack of knowledge here with a few questions :D

So, you've taken the piece of coil spring, nice bit of steel, then you're heating it and beating it into shape, you've got your shape sorted out so is this then tempered in any way?
If it is tempered (i'm presuming it is) how did you do that bit?

Thanks, mates. Tony, yes, I go through a bit of a heat treatment. I like to normalize the blade a couple of times (heat it to red and let it cool to black then back in for another cycle or two...doesn't take long). This relieves stresses built up from working the steel. Then I warm up some canola oil and carefully heat the blade up to critical (non magnetic) and quench it. I actually do this a couple of times too, especially with 5160 and 52100. Then I stick it in a tempering oven for a couple of one hour cycles at about 425 degrees Fahrenheit. Hope that makes sense.

Marvellous skills. Must be very satisfying doing a knife, tool from scratch.
