Obviously I know the answer but is this as thoroughly insane as I think it is:

I recently bought a pair of these as an interim measure.


In the same Specsavers two meters away were these:


Both have integral (fixed) nose pieces so no components to assemble. Both are simple injection moulded pieces.

But then, can I bear to give up Vivian Westwood’s name on my specs just to save £135?

I am thoroughly pleased with my cheap specs, enough that when both my eyes have been made to see as well as look I shall buy two more pairs.
(It would cost £30 to reframe my current £15 frame.)

I've been wearing titanium flexible leg reading glasses. Cost me all of £3.79 on eBay.....same frame, without lenses was quoted at £175 in Specsavers three weeks ago.

I didn't buy them.

I've got two pairs of glasses, one were £40 NHS ones, the other were £200+Ray Bans. They do exactly the same job, but I wear the Ray Bans a lot more because I like nice things. On the other hand my posh knife hardy ever comes out of it's sheath, whereas my Hultafors' get used on a really regular basis because I also like cheap things. Each to their own innit.

Fair enough but my point is that if the Vivian Westwood specs are a nice thing then so are the £15 pair. They are indistinguishable unless examined closely for the trade mark. The tiny differences in shape and dimension make no differing impression of the wearer at all.

Why would anyone pay the inflated price when the others are right there by their shoulder?

One of my friends is currently wearing a pair of specs that I absolutely guarantee cost more than I've spent on my last half dozen pairs, I can also be 100% certain that they're the height of eyewear fashion.

Nonetheless, I can't look at them without thinking "Ah! There's Wally!"

I have two pairs of specs, distance and mid-range, can't get on with bi/varifocals at all. I get both from a local optician, and have had more or less the same frame design for both for years. I then buy 'spares' from the online cheapie dealers. Usually very plain, solid types like those in Pattree's post for emergencies. I also hold onto my last prescription pairs as, while they obviously not 'right' for me any longer, they're a whole lot better than no correction at all.
