Folder with saw?

I know most of us use fixed bladed knives (myself included) but I think it's fair to say most jobs could be accomplished equally well with a reasonable folder. The main problem with a folder being the comparritive lack of strength when comparred to a fixed blade, especially when trying to cut wood of more than say 1 inch in diameter.
To over come this though I've often thought a really usefull folding knife that would cover most normal needs for the outdoors person would be a nice single blade drop point knife with an additional saw blade as well. That way and larger cutting jobs could be handled with the saw.

I know Buck do a model and of course there's the SAK's but I was thinking about a nice (read traditional) looking knife.
I think a blade shape similar to a Spyderco would be good to make opening the main blade easier with the saw perhaps a similar shape to a larger style SAK.
The idea would be to keep the knife as thin as possible to minimise bulk, that's why I don't want an SAK with the redundant can opener etc.
What do people think?

Does anyone know of any manufacturers that produce such a tool or are there any custom makers that could it?

Cheers

That's the kind of thing Doc - cheers
Although I think I would prefer a locking blade of a slightly different shape (never really liked that particular shape - anyone know what the shape is called?)

Any other suggestions?

How about modding an Opi Saw and a normal Opi blade? I saw either here or on British Blades a modified Opinel that had two blades, both with the locking rings. They opened from seperate ends, but you could replace a normal blade for the saw blade. I've never used an Opinel saw, but hear nothing but good things about them. It shouldn't be too difficult to do, depending on how nice you want it to look!!

I have read a good review of the SOG revolver. It has a saw and knife blade.
SOG knife
I'm not sure what type of knife it counts as because it is fairly unique.
A lot of traditional folding hunters (particularly European ones) often have a saw blade or interchanagable blades. Maybe this is because people typically use smaller knives in Europe. I just can't think of any manufacturers now.
Here is a Gerber Skin Saw Knife which is fairly tempting :D

The Opinal is an option although I was hoping for something more......gentlemanly appealing (more of a gentleman's folder)
The Gerber is an option but is similar to the Buck. I'm not keen on the metal used on either tbh.
I wonder how easy it would be to get a new custon blade made up ?????
It might be worth getting it rescaled at the same time....

Thanks for the ideas chaps

Could be my memory playing up, but I vaguely recall seeing a folder with a saw by Browning or Beretta or some such. Apologies if a wild goose chase. Might also be worth browsing Cabelas on line catalogue.

Mark,

I think they do a SAK with locking blade and a saw but without the other bits - check out the Heinnie site in the SAKs section.

You could also re-handle it if you dont like the scales.

Hi,

This is a stupid question and not the place for it at that, but I was just looking at the SAK from the Heinnie link below.

The SAK reamer and punch – how do you use the punch? I’ve had one for 25 years and never thought about it.

Answers should include a slap on the back of the head for stupidity!

Thanks for all the replies everyone.
I'm not sure that I can find exactly what I'm after. Think I'll have to buy something close and then see about customising it a little, perhaps with a better blade and different scales....

Well, if you're a patient man, you might locate an Old Timer 225OT on ebay. The blade is a superb all-rounder but doesn't lock. The saw, however, does lock.

I think one of the large-bladed SAKs would serve you well. On these, the blade locks but the saw doesn't.

I think its the Rucksack.

I've got one in the classic burgundy colour and its great. The saw is really efficient for is size.

It's considerably larger than a rucksack. I believe it is the equivalent to the fireman. I picked it up this spring at a knife show for a whopping $12, IIRC.

Fireman

There is some variability in the large SAKs among the saw blades but they all cut about the same.

The hunter is the top one in my photo above. I have a friend who has used the hunter to field dress a dozen or more deer. He loves it. When he gets back to camp, he just throws it in the soapy water to clean.
