Flying and Bushcraft

  • Come along to the amazing Summer Moot (21st July - 2nd August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
I can't see a rpoblem with light aircraft at all. How many light aircraft do you think are up in the air polluting the sky at one time compared to a commercial airliner? I'd bet not many here have a zero impact on the enviornment. All that was asked was where was a good place to visit in alight aircraft for a bit of camping, so why not stick to the question in hand and open another thread to debate the evils of light aircraft?

Plymouth, by the way, had an airport I believe, right on the edge of the city so it's not too far from getting onto the fringes of Dartmoor. They have plenty of light aircraft in there, I used to go past it on my paper round but this was a good few years ago!!!

for Dartmoor in addition to Plymouth (EGHD) there is Eaglescott (EGHU) 600m long (grass i think)

for the west coast of Scotland there is:
CAMPBELTOWN (EGEC) 3000m+ long (Kintyre)
ISLAY (EGPI) 1545m long
TIREE (EGPU) 1472m long
BENBECULA (EGPL) 1836m long (outer Herbides)

for the Lakes
Barrow (EGNL) 1014m long
Carlisle (EGNC) 1837m long

Fantastic Cheers for that

Incidentally did anyone else see the interesting 'Great Global Warming Scandal' last week, are we being brainwashed into thinking our 'carbon footprint' has any significant effect on the environment?
Yes I thought it was great. For a long while I have thought that the media and governments would blow the whole global-warming ordeal out of proportion. They can make it suit their own agenda, generate money, spin and jobs, turning the eviromental issue into a industry of its own.

Dont believe everything you see on TV,of course us humans are having an effect on the environment because we dont live in harmony with it as all other animals do.
Ironic, because its most likely the box thats fooled you into believing what you know so far about global-warming. Everything is influence, you've just gota learn what information sources you can trust. and yes in this day and age with an unmeasurable amount of information being generated and kicked out in the public domain its hard to tell.

The Earth is changing. It always has and it always does and we won't make any difference at all.
I've double glazed, hung thick curtains, insulated, composted, collected rainwater, grown my vegetables, kept chickens and ducks for eggs, never bought a new car, suffered the aggravations of public transport, only flown 11 times - never further than Isle of Man - and only landed with the aircraft 4 times, and for what?
For politicians all over Europe to enjoy their beano's at my, and your, expense.
Do you really think that China and India are going to slow their economic development because we show them how to look after the Earth? They have people who really do live 'bushcraft' life styles and they can't wait to be post industrialised so they can afford to indulge themselves.

Enjoy your flight and have a good camp.
hear, hear!

Compulsory taxes to fund tree planting, thats what we need. Turn the UK back into a forest to offset everything that we do? Gets my vote :)
Man I wish! :D

I hardly ever watch TV i learn by reading and talking with people who study the environment.
I think its arrogant and ignorant to think us humans are not having an effect on the environment (Action/Reaction)and i know the earth goes through birth, death, rebirth phases but our actions now may prevent a rebirth after the next death phase.
What you have to remember is that the people with the most to gain(petrochemical companies)are the ones who can afford to finance TV programs telling the general public its all OK dont worry and carry on consuming beyond your needs.
Just because most people aspire to have a lavish lifestyle dosnt make it right but hey we will all be dead in a hundred years time so lets all live extravagant lifestyles now because it wont matter to us when we are dead

Haida Indian saying.
“We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors. We borrow it from our children”

I've got a friend with private pilots licence who is currently working on his commerical and has never been camping. He wants to take me flying so suggested we combined our interests.

So the question is where do you reckon we should go for a couple of days, we're talking small aircraft here not transatlantic etc.

Matt

Have ya found anywhere yet ?

Islay looked good, unfortuanately its quite a trek around to keep outside of certain airspaces, we'd also need to stop on the way there and back as the airport doesn't stock any fuel, course this puts airport charges up. Oban looks good, just planning routes etc at the moment.
