Here is a word to the wise though on refurbing old rods... most rods aren't worth that much - old reels are though. However, a few rods have a lot of value in the makers mark being retained... so before you sand it down may be worth a bit of research.
I've several of my grandfather's split cane rods.
he's ninety one so they must be around 70yrs old.
must dig em out.
worked fine when I learnt to fish twenty yrs ago...
vintage fishing rod thread sounds good.
(Lets be honest it says vintage so course I like the idea )
Unless the cork is rotten I wouldn't... better grades of cork then than now I have a split cane fly rod from post WW2 era and that is perfectly fine... no hesitation in using it.
