Hi All,

I'm staying in Finland in a couple of weeks, in a cabin in one of the national parks. I'd like to try some fishing, under their Everyman's Rights (http://www.ymparisto.fi/download.asp?contentid=25603), but was hoping someone could give me some advice, having done no fishing before (please excuse my ignorance!).

My understanding from the link is that it's fine to use a line, rod, hook, (weight?) as long as there's no reel. And a lure presumably doesn't include bait?

Can anyone suggest any gear I could look at? Almost everything I find online, even the little telescopic sets, seems to include a reel. Also, anyone got any idea if I stand much chance of catching anything, in the lakes in the national parks?

Thanks in advance!

Hi there,
Sounds like 'pole fishing' territory to me! http://www.fishyworld.co.uk/polefishing.html
Basically a pole with some elastic as a shock absorber between the line and pole. Id get a book on fishing out the library, on the way back from the library get a rod licence from the post office and have a practice before you go on holiday, it can be relaxing to go fishing even if you don't catch anything , but catching a fish will make your day.
What terminal tackle and tactics will depend on what fish you are going for so do some research into what is caught where you are going.

Tight lines!

Hi Abiggs,
I have just got back from a weeks trip to the Arctic Circle hiking centre. I used a hobo fishing line during my trip. I had to have the smallest setup as I carried everything with me for the week.
I asked a local about fishing permits and was told that a handline is fine without a permit. You will be catching grayling or river trout if you are in the same area as I went to. Where are you going to? If I can help with any info give me a shout.
I went on this trip with forum member Muddy Boots, we will pop up photos etc at some point.

Thanks, I have dropped Hendrik a line.

Would be great to see some photos. I'm going to the Nuuksio National Park. I am leaning towards getting a hobo kit and giving that a try. Any suggestions on bait out there? (sorry, total newb!)

Thanks for all your help, very useful. Not really fished before (other than Piranaha's in Brazil and crabbing as a boy), but would love to get into it more.

Small mepps work well for me in Sweden and Norway, also for a beginner maybe a wet fly on a bubble float?
If you really want to catch some fish though, look up Oter fishing "oter fisk".
Can't help you with the rules and regs in Finland though.

Edit: Here you go..

I have spent a considerable amount of time in Finland, and lucky for me that my father-in-law is a water bailiff. However the general rule is that a pole set up with float and hook/worm does not require a license. using this method you can catch some good size Perch which taste delicious.
