Hello all! I am dragging the wife to Devon next week for her first time camping (in a tent, only bushcrafty stuff will be outdoor cooking over a campfire) and would appreciate any recommendations for decent camp sites or even activities!

Already got a trip to the Eden Project on the agenda but the rest of the week is still open to suggestions

Thanks in advance

The Eden project is in Cornwall, they will strip you of all currency such as shiny bits of glass and baubles as you cross the Tamar. :D

Devon is a big county, buddy, any particular quadrant? - Of course I would recommend Dartmoor :)

Thanks for the speedy reply! Nowhere in particular in mind yet, finding a decent camp site so the missus has a pleasant stay is main priority so far in order that we get more outdoors time in the future (ulterior motive? me? surely not!)

Short walks to areas of natural beauty or historic sites would probably suit us better on this trip if that's any guidance

Well, if you head for the Dartmoor direction, the Plume of Feathers pub in Princetown has a large campsite out the back. Nice food, beer etc. Plenty of walks, to be had and archeological interest in the area; there is a national park visitor centre in the village. Dartmouth and Salcombe are lovely seaside towns worth a day visit and an ice cream. Exeter and Plymouth would provide nice shopping days out, the museum in Exeter (Queen street) has been recently renovated and is well worth a visit....

No! Don't come to Dartmoor - it's rubbish. And the roads are far too busy here already. :D

Yup, either of the National Parks has that in spades. Dartmoor is high and wild and has lots of beauty spots and antiquities. The western side would put you closer to the Eden Project, which is a fair drive. But Exmoor has the wild-wooded coast, and cuter villages. South Devon is for the seaside brigade. East Devon is the true red-soiled-deep-laned-cob-and-thatch-rolling-bosom of the place, and is now full of people, which is why most of us left and came to... Mid Devon, which is the quiet, farming heartland of lush hedgerows and Ambrosia-cows the colour of the soil.

Why you want to bother going to Cornwall though, even for the day. Nothing but theives, liars and bandits, the lot of 'em. Couldn't clot cream if their lives depended on it, and the custard's bloody rubbish.

Yup, I just wouldn't bother with Cornwall.

Devon is also the home of the pasty, having invented it several hundred years before the Cornish had realised what fire was.

Yep, the national flag of Cornwall is the Skull and Crossbones really, St Piran's is just it in disguise. Far too nice a Duchy to share with the rest of you. At the roundabout on the Tamar Bridge you will find a collecting box, simply deposit your cash and carry on back round the roundabout.

Hehe. A bit like Wales then? :)
Not sure about the claim to the Duchy though - nearly half of it's here in Devon, the Forest of Dartmoor. So unfortunately we have to share all the lovely biscuits

Morwelham Quay, for a day out. I took the family a few years ago, and it was excellent. Plymouth aquarium is good too. In fact, I like Plymouth generally.

Stay out of places like Polperro and Looe unless you like crowds, flip-flops, and tacky plastic souvenirs.

Oh, and Endicotts is in Exeter...
