Come along to the amazing Summer Moot (21st July - 2nd August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
Thought I'd see if I have figured out how to post photos into a thread and show my first two efforts - both from birch and finished with olive oil. 4 earlier attempts went on the fire due to splitting before these made it. I learnt a lot though.
Thanks chaps.
Tony - they are pretty good to eat with. The larger one I made for my 5 year-old, hence the narrow shape. Incidentally, does anyone know what the black colouration is on the smaller one - is it disease of some sort?
I think the black is some form of spalting, proudced by a fungi when it attacks the wood. Wood turners love the stuff buy warn people about the dust as it may contain harmfull spores.
I personaly would think twice about useing it for food though.
Oh good - I can see it all now:
Can you explain, Mr Bowman, how it is your child came to be infected with fungal birch spores, and incidentally, why are there splinters in the tongue????????
Well, Doctor, it's like this - I like a bit of bushcraft you see, and...........
often wood will get discolorations like that from the minerals ,in the ground, around the tree. Perhaps fungus does similar things, however, discolorization like that is quite common place with many species of wood.
