Firesteels: I could never understand why anyone would bother to make a smart bit of wood turning to put on one.
Now I know, the stupid bit of C**p plastic that I have on mine has come adrift.
What wood should one use to make a fancy end? I assume that it needs to be a decent bit of hardwood but what would you recommend?

I've just been cutting antler for a whole load of them!

I use antler crowns for some of mine. They always seem to look the best. I just seen one in another forum where he had mounted the firesteel into a piece of fatwood which I though was brilliant. I also just turned some Yew today as well as handles for later. I just prefer the antler, especially using tines. They look fab and the longer length is excellent.

My best homemade one is antler with a buffalo cap, I think it looks nice and it works very well
