Fire steel Problem

Firesteels are getting quite popular lately so i thought I'd post this.

I recently droppped my firesteel on a concrete floor and it shattered. I am now left with a firesteel half the size.

This did surprise me as it is made of metal but it happened.

I was curious if anyone else had the same problem????

Theres some really knowledgable people on this forum, and im sure theyll correct me if im wrong, but i was under the impression that it was kinda like a tightly compressed powder, or something like that, as opposed to being made of actual metal?

The construction of the Ferro-magnesium fire sticks does seem to give rise to some frailties. Aside from avoiding to drop the stick, you also need to avoid protracted contact with moisture. See this previous thread:
