Every now and then I like to order a handful of DVD's so I've got a few unwatched numbers in reserve. Also getting a hankering for a bit of a movie night.

What would you recommend as some of cinemas finest?

The Committments (truly a masterpiece of music)

The Unforgiven (second best Western ever made)

Tombstone (best Western ever made)

Forest Gump (genuine pathos & laugh out loud funny. Tom Hanks at his finest)

Snatch (Guy Ritchies best)

Jaws (best creature feature)

The Holiday (genuinely good RomCom & best Xmas film)

The Terminator (best escapist SciFi)

Close Encounters (best alien flic)

Alien (second best alien flic)

The Last Samurai (Tom Cruise best)

12 angry men - The black and white original

Flight of the Phoenix - Again Black and White original

The Thing

Revolver

Master and Commander

Spartacus

Legends of the Fall

Heat

Copland

The Departed

Whiplash

Heretic

The Departed is a poor copy of a much better film. Infernal Affairs

Open Range
. Western, Robert Duval, Kevin Costner.
Other westerns worth a watch, Hidalgo, Wyatt Earp, Appaloosa. Liked Tombstone, Silverado, the Dollars duo and TGTB&TU.

If you appreciate good tactics and fire arm handling in films:
Collateral. Tom Cruise as hit man, Jamie Fox as cab driver forced to drive him between hits.
Way of the Gun. James Caan and Benicio DelToro. Not great story, but great shoot out.
Man from Nowhere, Korean, original with subtitles, not the dubbed version.
Blackhawk Down.

Ford vs Ferrari
. Nice film, great fight between Jason Bournemouth and Batman!
Secretariat was nice, as a family film.

Hidden Figures, and if you like that sort of thing, Best of Enemies.

The Edge
was very good.

If you haven’t seen Maverick, Top Gun 2, I thought it better than the first, and worth seeing. Silly plot objective, but nice character expansion, and great flying scenes.

The Equaliser, with Denzel Washington. First one…cannot recommend the second and third. First made a real effort with cinematography, had character exploration, and great action and some dark humour.

Given you have my favourite western as the 2nd best I'm going to have to look out for Tombstone.
Agree on The Commitments as well. Fantastic musical film.

I'm going to offer two suggestions.

Kodachrome.

Green Book.

Both good stories, quite emotional, great casts and very nicely done. Both fairly recent too.
