your house!
Hello chaps.

Trekkingnut, put me onto this idea, so thought i'd have a go as I'm coming to the opinoin that most things can be made myself, it's just a matter of having a go, I am by no means a handy guy, so if you like it have a try!

Tools used:

Fine cut back saw
Drill.
Drill bits same sizes as ferro rod and one same size as brass rod.
Disc sanding attachment with 120 grit disc.
First cut file.
Knife.
Small draper vice.
Araldite quick cure two part epoxy.
Wet and dry sand paper from 240 grit up to 2500.
Danish oil non coloured.

Materials:

Reindeer antler bought from the Reindeer center after spending the day with the herd, great centre well worth a visit.
Horn of which animal I don't know, I shall have to ask Raikey who very kindly gave it to me.
Brass rod.
two mill leather cut from keel covers for oyster yachts:rolleyes:.
Ferro rod from Woodlore

the process is evident from the pics, but please ask if you need any thing explaining.

S I want to put this rod in that antler and have it look nice around my neck or hanging of my belt.

cut, to size.

Horn drilled.
IMG02309-20110506-1609.jpg

Dry layout to see if i like the look.
IMG02310-20110506-1624.jpg

Roughly measure the depth needed.
IMG02303-20110506-1547.jpg

Build a fort(stock fort image)
IMG01827-20110328-1249.jpg

Then drill the hole in the cover, I didn't put any pressure on the drill even supported it's weight a little and just let it find it's way through the fibrous centre, you don't need a perfect sealing fit.
IMG02304-20110506-1549.jpg

perfect.
IMG02306-20110506-1554.jpg

Then this arrived from Mr Kirtleys comp on his blog!!!
IMG02300-20110506-1159.jpg

Drill the hole into which you will fix the ferro rod. i'm also having a leather washer here so is to stop and noise from the two pieces knocking together when being worn.
IMG02318-20110507-1200.jpg

Stick it all together minus the ferro rod and leather washer.
IMG02315-20110507-0855.jpg

and enjoy your evening.
IMG02312-20110506-1818.jpg

IMG02313-20110506-2039.jpg

Then come the morning you're ready to sand and shape the ends.
IMG02316-20110507-1107.jpg

then use the file to flatten the ends that meet.
IMG02308-20110506-1604.jpg

I used this pic again as I realise I haven't got a pic of this bit, it looks similar but with glue on.

I covered the leather on the side that meets the antler with glue, and the hole in the antler, ensuring to get as much air out as I could, then push the rod into the hole, and apply pressure using the other half make sure you don't put so much on so that it sticks the cover to the rod handle else you have made a nice but useless tomb for a spark stick.

Then sand to your desired finish and soak in Danish oil for a few days.
