fat airic in hammock

  • Come along to the amazing Summer Moot (21st July - 2nd August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
I tried one in a Hennessey hammock, and wouldn't really recommend it with that as it was quite awkward getting settled inside (it felt like an all-in wrestling match, the upside being that I was toasty warm by the time I'd finally got into my sleeping bag!). If you've a 'normal' hammock (ie,one of the group-buy types, not entering from underneath), it should be absolutely fine. The Fat Airic should be pretty good in that case as it's sturdier than a normal pad and will help push out the sides a bit.

When I used the closed cell mat I didnt have any problems getting in, it was just bl##dy cold. Had wondered about a double sheepskin, but the local supplier wanted £80 for one.Dont the hairs fall out of reindeer skins after about 3 years?
Ian.

Hi,

I've used a fat airic in a hammock, only partially inflated to provide some insulation, but also to maintain shape of hammock. No real issues apart from the fact that it and the hammock have a very high slippery co-efficient.

If you can use something grippy between the mat and the hammock you should have a reasonable nights sleep. (I also wore a t-shirt, socks, and a fleece hat).

Cheers

TC

There is that anti-slip matting for putting under rungs? That might do the trick.

This is only a thought and by all means tell me to shut up and go away but could you not but cycle puncher repair kit glue or silicon bathroom sealer on the bottom of you mat

Not a bad idea Adi.

I've been browsing round some hammock sites today trying to work out if you can get snakeskins that fit over an expedition asym + hex fly or not. (it's very confusing! )
Anyway, I ended up at Jacks 'R' Better as they used to make an alternative to snakeskins (but don't anymore) and saw the quilts they make. I know Hennessy make something similar but they don't provide much detail on them but JRB shows how theirs work in their installation instructions.
I'm considering trying to make my own out of an old sleeping bag and a bit of cutting and sewing. I think if I get it right, I might be able to eliminate the need for a sleeping bag in the hammock on mild nights.

Any thoughts?

First off, it has been my, albeit limited, experience that you can get by with far less insulation if it is wrapped around the outside of the hammock, than you need if you are lying on it. It is quite possible that you could do withoug a sleeping bag in mild weather if you were well enough insulated underneath.

Reading many of the US sites on using hammocks, many people like the large size of Ridgerest by Cascade Design, same company that make Thermarest. The large mat is wider than the standard pad and so can wrap around your shoulders better. It could probably be trimmed down towards the feet, and made shorter, but the width is worth looking at. Since the hammock comes up around you it will compress your insulation on the sides as well as under you.

Places worth a look for hammock info:

http://hikinghq.net/forum/ don't miss the main page, and due to low activity on the forum, be sure to get threads listed "From the Beginning" not just the last month. :)

I have recieved one of these and have tried it in the garden. It is very warm but I have still to test it in the woods. I will let you know how I get on with it and Don, you will see it as you will be at Inchcialloch as well when I test it. If you ask nicely I might even let you try it one night to get a second opinion.

Hi all,

I used to have the cold back/butt syndrome with my Hennessy Hammock Expedition A-sym, but since I got an undercover for it (available from the HH site) that's not been a problem. My girlfriend can also add a thermal blanket to the underside of hers, which combined with the Undercover makes it proper toasty like...

Hehe. I thought of getting one but the cost of shipping and customs this side put me off a bit. How much did it set you back?

Going to try a home made effort up at Inchallock, hope it works.

It was about an extra $30 for postage I think but did not get hit for duty.

We will be able to compare results at Inchcialloch. Just hope it is cold enough ;)
