hello :)
don't have one unfortunately, they look absolutely lovely and the leather handle is supposed to be very comfortable. I was just reading a fallkniven thread over on british blades and that model was mentioned favourably. Might be worth a search over there aswell :D

The company IT big brothers won't let me on the British Blades website - Category 'Weapons' is filtered and access is denied.
Just goes to show how different people think. I think ( and all of us here) that a knife is a 'Tool' but obviously the IT people here think otherwise :(

Well I've bitten the bullet and am going to buy the knife after some research it seems it's a good-un. Outdoorcode has offered me a good deal on it and has been very helpful with advice and allowing me to pay a deposit so a big thanks for that :You_Rock_

I'm getting it in a few weeks time as I need to be paid first and I'm expecting 2 cheques from the council for work I've done for them teaching so this is my christmas present to myself..........can't wait to put it through it's paces :D

I owe quite a few knives, thinking of it I am also a knivenut but one of the very best is the Fallkniven NL4. It is in my backpack the last three years. Every now and then you've got to do things with a knife where it is not meant for that is not good for a knife. This is the moment were the men are seperated from the boys; the NL 4 withstands a lot of abuse and still cuts like nothing happend. Definately my favorate outdoor companion. If you want one look at www.fallkniven.nl they stock and ship all the models. Have fun, take care

The N4 looks like a nice knife too graybear.

A question for the knife enthusiasts - When talking about edge hardness what does HRC mean? and is a knife with 59HRC good or what? :dunno:

Hello again :)
I might be able to give you a bit of info, (some of which might be rubbish), there are lots of expert knife makers and collectors on bcuk that will be able to give you something more precise.
From what i gather, hrc is a measure of a metals hardness on the "rockwell c" scale. I think there are a few variables in what gives a blade its hardness, including steel type and how that steel is heat treated and tempered. Basically, the higher the number , the harder the blade. Desirable hardness varies depending on what the blade will be used for but the basic balance for knives seems to be around ease of sharpening, edge retention and toughness without being prone to chipping or snapping. I think, basically, if its soft, a blade will be flexible, easy to sharpen but it wont hold an edge well and will need regular sharpening. If a blade is very hard it will hold an edge very well but it will be more difficult to sharpen and it will be more brittle (metal drill bits are very hard to cut steel but they snap and break easily.)
I don't know where hrc59 falls on this scale, i think its pretty hard but reasonable to sharpen. As its a fallkniven, i'd guess it will be excellent and will handle everything you can throw at it . The idun has a laminated "supersteel" blade which is designed to be extremely resiliant and hard, with excellent edge retention yet remain flexible enough not to be brittle.
Hope this helps in some way and my apologies if it's not accurate , i'm sure someone who knows what they're on about will clear it up or fill in the gaps :)

That's really helpful Happy camper thanks. I thought it was something along those lines. As far as I know Fallkniven have a good reputation so I'm sure I'll be pleased with it.
I've actually gone ahead and decided to buy the knife now, and am paying for it next Friday from Outdoor code, who has provided an excellent service and will be sending it out to me by special delivery. I can't wait, and will be having a good play with it all weekend ..............very excited :red:

I'd like to say an enormous thank you to Outdoor code for sending me the nl5 idun by Fallkniven so quickly after me paying for it. I paid friday and it was there at my house bright and early saturday morning. The price Andrew did it for me was excellent too and I'll certainly be giving Andrew a shout for any kit in the future excellent service :You_Rock_ Thanks very much Outdoor code
And the knife........ well it's a beauty. Very robust and perfect for general bushcraft and heavy work. I've had a little time to have a play but not much so looking forward to the weekend. :D :D :D
