Eydon Model DS Storm Kettle

  • Come along to the amazing Summer Moot (21st July - 2nd August), a festival of bushcrafting and camping in a beautiful woodland PLEASE CLICK HERE for more information.
Just looked at the construction diagram and it’s no different from the others. I presume that it will function in exactly the same way.
I couldn’t find anything on their site about the metal they use and I’m left to presume it’s aluminium - light weight but very unforgiving if the kettle boils dry. Stainless steel isn’t much better but it gives you a few more minutes.

Had an eydon storm kettle and came to the conclusion buying another 25 years later no bad reviews for a company from mid 1970s. Sure you will be fine.
The bottom lip of DS looks wide and feeding fire kindling & not a bonfire-I'd buy one as, should be fine.
I have full size and ordered a poppin storm kettle

How does eydon compare to ghillie and kelly? I have a kelly but want a smaller one. I will not buy kelly again as they're made in china.

I've had a ghillie for donkeys and use it every time I am out in the canoe. It's my second one, I upgraded to the HA version and gave my old one to a friend who still uses it. Ghillie make in the UK. Recommended from me!

Not sure about the fabric bit, I think you'd need to be careful with the fabric to avoid an ;external fire; ;) I am not that careful... In saying that IIRC Eydon were reputed to be a bit more of a high quality product but ghillie does me and tbh I am not happy with corks on these things.

You pays your money and you takes your choice.

They all work the same way, they are all highly fuel efficient, they all last a very long time.

My first one was an Ecotrekker but it sprang a leak. I think that it was made in Kenya. Now I’m a big Kelly fan and have been for twenty years and more.

I too would avoid anything that closed off the water tank. We’ve had this discussion quite recently and others disagree with me.

I also don’t like the chimney pan support. The Kettle boils too quickly to cook anything much and the whole set up loses stability with any sized pan up there. I use the Hobo on the fire base. I think all the makes have a provision for proper cooking now.

Yeah, not made in the far east is a big deal for me and that is where kelly fails.

Aren't eydon made in the uk too? I've sent them an email about it. Hopefully they'll reply.

Is the HA version worth the extra? My ghillie is getting a bit battered now - it’s the plain Jane one

I use the chimney support upside down on the fire base with my ghillie kettle :)

What great bread link and write up on the author. I don't have a Kelly or a Zebra but enjoyed reading it. For now I'll stick to flatbreads, but now I know how to do buns.

Meh not sure tbh. As of Nov '24 mine looked like this. I dunno when I bought it, duringone of sandbags group buys perhaps? The HA is gone off the base due to heat but the main body is looking fine still. Don't think they are any more robust, as always the base gets a beating and sometimes needs persuaded back in to shape.

That's the biggest selling point of the kellys for me, i.e. that the base is stainless even with the aluminium ones.

This from a few summers ago. I took my horse and cart and was out for a few days. She wasn't really used to being on a tether, but after a few nights it was second nature. The kelly performed flawlessly. Can't fault it. Other than being chinese made.

Thanks, yeah it’s the base of mine that’s most beaten up (the kettle is a bit to but not badly). I wonder if a KK stainless fire bowl fits a ghillie?

I was looking at the petromax version aswell., doubles up as a water carrier

Petromax is the best model of them all = legs to keep bottom of burner off the ground and better handle on the kettle. And screw-on cork to keep water inside it during transport.
