Hi all,
My name is Bushra and I'm currently doing a PhD in Archaeology that has experimental elements. I am a complete city girl through and through, never been camping, or even glamping, and the most I spend outdoors is excavations or the occasional hike. I'm particularly interested in making strings and rope from natural sources like sinew, different animal hairs, and a range of plant materal e.g. trees, sedge, grass, etc. I know about the common favourites like lime bast, nettle, flax, elm, bramble in some cases etc. but I'm interested in maybe even some obsure or uncommon ways people have managed to make cordage from different plants.
Recently I managed to make some bone needles from reindeer leg but they're not quite so good. Still angular and I found it difficult to flake off the length I needed.

Looking forward to some great conversation :)

Welcome! I too am an experimental archaeologist, well I did the experimental Masters at Exeter 20 odd years ago :lmao: If you've not already done so, I suggest talking to Prof Linda Hurcombe, aside from running the Msc at Exeter she has an interest in prehistoric fibres.

(copied from the cord making thread...)
I have done a little amateur "Experimental Archaeology" when I worked at Castell Henllys Iron Age fort in Pembrokeshire. Needles can be fun :) If you heat a line along Antler (with the hot end of a smoldering stick) it give a bit of a breaking line ... not sure if it works with bone... I just shattered bone and hoped for the best or at best scored it with flint flakes to give a break line - long, time consuming work!
Some of my experimental bits ...

I still have most of my pieces although I sold a lot to the Pembs Coast Nat Park archaeologist, for his handling collection, when I retired.
Have fun!
