DVD decoder Help

I have been using my pc to watch dvd's for ages now it has just stopped working and now say's that I need to purchase a dvd decoder I thought that media player was part of win xp can anyone offer any suggestions and where can i get a freeware decoder..cheers

Just google it. There are loads out there.
I use a Divx player, find it works better on a wider range of formats http://www.divx.com/divx/windows/
should also start WMP working again after installation

Same error message could not detect a dvd decoder

I use Linux but that said ther eis a windows version of VLC

windows update has a decoder in there somewhere. could be a cookie or web trojan has trashed your settings.
