Because you will need stitches.
I was sitting happily carving in my wood today by the fire when for some unknown reason I swapped my lovely Ben Orford carving knife into my right hand and about 3 cuts in I slipped and took it straight down to the bone on my left index finger.
1 mile walk back to the motor then driving a now very bloody me to the hospital where 5 stitches and a lot of questions about spoon carving ensued.
Now I have my feet up and a very large Lagavulin to soothe the pain.
