So i was supposed to be adopting a 4yr old jack russell but now that has fallen through. I am still going to look for a dog now and it just means i can take my time and researh it more. It just got me thinking as to whether or not it's ok to take dogs away with you overnight in the woods and if anyone here does that? i have seen in the gallery some photos of dogs in the woods but couldnt find any topics when i searched.

There are a few people on here that take their four legged friends with them when they go crafting, as far as I am aware the only restrictions are down to land owners saying that you are not allowed access to take them over their land, but if you have a friendly landowner that allows you to craft on his land then there is no problem.

Apart from that they are not very good at bow drill or any of the friction fire lighting stuff, they can't whittle very well with a frosts mora, but they are very good company:D

I take my dogs with me when i go camping or for an overnighter.

Have to watch when people are about though, My German Shepherd has a habit of scaring people at night, think a wolf and then imagine one three times the size :lmao: wouldn't hurt a fly though, not unless i told her to :lmao:

Well i was thinking more along the lines of a jack russel or a westie so i don't think people would get too frightened. Still not sure what to get but most probably a jack russell. All i have to di is get one then train it so only waiting about another year or so....

I have a wheaton terrier cross as well as a GSD, first time i took him camping he was 4 months old, he loved it and he was off the lead most of the time, didn't go out of sight.

He wasn't trained but he was still well behaved.

When im sneaky beaky camping i always take my dog as an "early warning system" he behaves well sometimes the fire is too hot for him though, but sometimes keep him tied to his lead attached to my bergen, but most of the time he just settles down

Love the sneaky beaky camping, i often have to "sneaky beaky" camp aswell to avoid the nasty forestry commission men who leave more signs of being there than any camper.
A dog would be good for this i suppose. I shall look into what type of dog then and see what i can come up with.

I have a Staffy and although old she is still very alert and picks up any noise
Shes a bit to old to take camping with me though
leon

A german shepard is way too big for for where i live but i do like them and have good memories of one from when i was younger but a staffy is out of the question, i have had so many bad experiences with staffies, i know people say they are good dogs and the whole nanny dog thing and that it's the owners that give them the bad name but everytime i see a staffy i just always hope that it stays on the lead by the owners side and doesn'ty lunge at anyone. Saying that my neighbour has a staffy and it's a good dog and hasn't done anything wrong. Still i'm papranoid though.

I don't particularly like Staffs, mostly because in london there is a lot of inbreeding, and the breed has been going down hill which is very sad, because they are nice dogs, but you can never be to sure of one, i know this as i used to have one, brilliant with other dogs but mad as a hatter.

I prefer English bull terriers and i am getting one very soon :D

Clark my mum is a pro dog groomer, so i know a lot about dogs, i would be more than happy to give you a list of small dogs that are easily trained and make really good companions if you want.

I have a 7yr old Samoyed, and although he is pure white I love taking him out with me on overnighters, he's good as gold and never wanders off out of site.

At the last two West Wales meets in Gellie, one of the lads has brought his Jack Russel with him and the dog just wanders around all day but never goes far.

Yeah i'd appreciate a list of small dogs that may be suitable, that'd be mucho appreciated! I fancied a whippet as my friend has always had them and they are superb dogs but i really am swaying towards a jack russell just because i've looked after them before and they are great dogs. I don't like staffies because a few years ago one ran onto the dual carriageway and i promptly hit it at about 60mph and killed it but the damage that was done to the car was obscene, the dog was like a lump of lead it was so muscular, then i got attacked by one when i was cycling along to work and in my panic to defend myself i killed that one aswell with a kick from my rig boots. Every staffy i meet mostly is a git but that can be said for most of the owners i have dealings with which also explains that.

Killed two staffs  they must have an omen against you or something.

Ok here goes

Jack Russell- can be a bit mad
French bulldog
Pug
Whippets - really nice dogs, i looked after one for about a year, well, me mam did.
Brussels griffon
Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
Schnauzer
Wheaton terrier
Shih Tzu - these dogs behave like dogs 10 times there size and can be stubborn, but its cute stubborness.
Manchester terrier

Labradors are nice dogs and you don't need a lot of space even though they are quite big.
Choc labs tend to be smaller than Black and golden labs.

Have a look at this website http://www.petplanet.co.uk/petplanet/breeds/dogs-breeds.htm

Don't listen to the info about the dogs as they don't have a clue what they are talking about, but have a look at the pics.

Don't forget the Heinz 57 varieties aswell, you can get some beautiful and loyal cross breeds!

My experience of Jack Russels is somewhat mixed. They are quite inbred oddly enough for a dog that isn't (wasn't?) a recognised breed and can be unpredictable. Lots of owners of these have had their noses bitten, but that might be because they don't always appreciate a cuddle?

Westies/ cairns etc are good, though our Cairn is much less active than normal - probably though down to the injuries he received from his previous owners. Our Manchester Terrier is a good size though ours is a bit overly nervous - again down to previous owners I suspect (she hates Staffs too, but that is because one bit her on the backside).

Jacob the english bull terrier.

Loves to carry logs and play.

Theres a dog shelter where i live that have a labxspaniel so that wouldnt be too big either, just quite a big decision for me thats all as it'll be here for a long time hopefully. Not sure about the whole omen thing, my uncle had a rottweiler and it died 2 days after i first met it but that was a heart problem apparently and it was only 3 yrs old.
