over a year ago i got an axe head from a car boot sale for 50p, on the side of it has chip chop no1 stamped into it. it looks really old and maybe hand forged but in very good nick i am gonna have a go at putting a handle onto it. does any have or know anything about the makers and are they any good?

Yup, Gilpins Chip Chop Kent pattern hatchet. It has been used quite a bit if the shape of the poll is anything to go by.

Most of the old English makers (including Gilpin) used very good steel, so a re-handle and a good sharpen and it will be good for another 50 years or so.

Cheers
