I'm all in favour of folk using their own dialect when speaking, but why bother in posts? The residents of Tinternetshire don't understand!

I could talk in broad Lincolnshire but don't think the mods would like it!

Personally, I love it - nothing gives me more pleasure than trying to work it out for myself or if I can't I ask the OP............sometimes there's just no better way to say what you mean, and you stay in touch with the wonderfull cornucopia that is the english language. I don't in the least mind having to do a little work to ferret out the meaning of something; of course there will always be times when you need to use standard english to convey a precise meaning, but mostly it just ain't that important.................

And of course there's always that particular humour that can only come across in a regional dialect, it's a window onto other people's view of things and that can only be a good thing.............atb mac

Thank you :D

Sorry Bowlander; I must be among the worst of offenders
I even confuse the Mods; I used the word thole in a post in the Mods today and Sam had to ask what it meant

I think of the forum as a conversation; folks (minding that young ears might be listening) just speak as they would normally.

I admit though, I do love listening to regional accents :D

cheers,
M

Tha knows nowt :) i like it myself (mesen) as it imbues a flavour of countrywide vernacular not always available unless youre there. I spend some time on a biker forum where half the fun is deciphering the jocks. Or Porridge Wogs as they call themselves.

I talk in riddles half the time and it's never deliberate. I read and correct all the time because I have pretty shoddy schooling . I like it when I read a Scott
Talking like a Scott but in text form (for example) . And I have to decipher the words . It prevokes the accent in my imagination and the words come together . I wish I wasn't as useless as i am with all this wrighing and typing malarkey . But I lose focus and my spelling and punctuation sufferers due to dyslexia and being a sod in school . And all the spell checks and technology don't help me either . It only makes it worse lol

I've never had any difficulty reading your posts, Paddytray, you always get your meaning across; I think it's just a matter of relax and write it as it comes..............different folk have different flavours, and language is a way of getting a lick of those flavours...................When I want Standard English I listen to the news on the BBC Home Service!................................atb mac

At least the Welsh, the Irish, and the Gaels translate for the rest of us :D

Funny isn't it though? Just how clear the Dutch and Scandinavians are with their written English ? Puts the rest of us to shame.
