Hi people ive been on a bit of a mission of late to recude weight in my pack and have been weighing my kit.

My dd travel hamock states it weighs 900g when it really weighs 1.4kg

My dd tarp two states it weighs 1.6kg when it really weighs 2.3 kg

Could someone else please weigh there dd gear and see if theres is correct or above the stated weight.

I was wondering if dd are legaly allowed to state a much lower weight than there product actually is.

At 3.7 kg i could be carrying a tent:11doh:

I often think when I'm packing a tarp, hammock, underblanket and all the cordage that goes with it, if it's just easier and lighter to take a one man tent again.

I suppose it spoils the fun though :)

My one man tent only weighs 1kg - I would be much lighter if this is what I carried...
However the tent is not as large, comfortable or flexible as a tarp and hammock nor does it allow me to watch the natural world from my bed!

I do like my tarp and hammock combo john
but i very much doubt i would of opted for dd kit if the correct weight was displayed i would have looked at other manafacturers for my options.

I dont think the tarp and hammock weighing an extra 1.2kg above the stated weight is fair on the purchaser and im pretty sure its against the trade descriptions act in one way or another.

However the tent is not as large, comfortable or flexible as a tarp and hammock nor does it allow me to watch the natural world from my bed!

My bomb-proof 1 man tent weighs 1.6kg while my tarp and bivi bag weigh just over a kilo (and more than the tent if you add in the trekking poles that hold it up if I'm heading for a tree-less zone) - not much of a weight saving but a huge gain in space and flexibility. 2.3 kg for tarp alone seems excessive.

A mystery, hmm... Are you weighing the webbing, elastic cord, stuff sack, pegs, etc, shown as "included" on DD website? I'd guess that the weight listed is NOT including these items, and is not the "packed" weight, but the weight of the hammock or tarp alone.
Or,,,, any chance that you have an older model? I see DD lists their hammock as "New, improved version", also weight is listed as "approximate", but as you say, not even close.

Ok ive removed the supplied cord and stuff sack from the tarp and its brought the weight down to 2kg

The hammock still registers the same with out the stuff sack but i cant see how dd hammocks could quote the weight and not include the webbing and mossie elastic as the hammocks not much use without them.

Just took Mrs C's scales out into the garage and weighed mine. Details of what's what are in my blog somewhere but;

Tarps shown here
Old 3x3 tarp with stuff sack - 1046g

Do you have the original DD hammock and tarp ? the latest generation are a lot lighter, the tarp is 3mx3m and about 500g-ish not sure about the hammock but its lighter as well.

LOL Chainsaw beat me to it.

BTW I thought the new hammock has a waterproof floor ?, the old was non-waterproof

You're right Stephen, the 'new new' hammock has the waterproof floor, I don't have one of these, my DD fanboy tendencies have their limits! :D

Cheers,

Alan

I have the normal dd tarp two not the new advertised lightweight one
the bag states as follows.

DD Hammocks tarp 2

3mx3m
1600g
includes 4 guy ropes

The hammock is the one with the fine mossie mesh not the wide stuff
the bag states

DD Hammocks travel hammock
100%nylon
900g
includes 10m of webbing plus 4m of rope to support mosquito net

i cant see how dd hammocks could quote the weight and not include the webbing and mossie elastic as the hammocks not much use without them.

It seems common practice over here to list a "base" or "stripped" weight which is often misleading and a separate "packed" weight; the other trick is a disclaimer, i.e. *all weights listed are aprox/all specs subject to change.

Hi alan my tarp stuff sack looks like neither of those in your photos but my hammock appears to be the same as the second one in your pictures.

Bit OT but this reads like an advert for the new DD tarp to me cos thats a very real weight reduction and one which I intend to investigate
This will be of no help to the original poster whatsover
Thanks though

Id be happy if the dd tarp i have weighed anywhere near what the stuff sack said it would.

I dont mean to sound like some sort of leight weight kit fanatic but i suffer from chronic fatigue syndrome(12 years of forces service ended in a med discharge because of it) and as such my fitness/energy levels are low which hinders the amount of distance i can cover with a bergan on my back.
the idea of me buying a tarp and hammock was to give me the ability to travel light but still be able to enjoy the outdoors in relative comfort.
There new "light weight tarp" does seem like an icredible weight saving but im afraid i wont be giving dd any more of my money.

Still, I hear ya- just not possible to carry the loads I did 20 years ago, you're welcome uncle sam. I don't care for the cost or fragility of silicone nylon tarps, but they cut the weight in half over PU coated. Why not contact DD, ask them (nicely, more flys w/honey) ***? Seems alot of folk are looking for a straight answer.
