Most other Davey Lamps seem to have a special locking system which can only be opened by the use of a powerful magnet, but mine doesn't for some reason and I can simply unscrew the top half from the bottom.
As said in the link above, one of the major components in the lamp to stop ignition of gasses was a metal gauze with holes in. If this gauze ever got blocked up or damaged it could result in the gasses igniting and then 'good night vienna'. My lamp has got this missing too, so if it was ever used would have been a potential death trap.
