Had a chance of spending 3 days in Sfantu Gheorghe. A small village with no road access on the southernmost arm of the Danube. Not very distinctive in any way except the over 4000 sqkm of delta around it. At one time a fishing village that moved eastward every now and then when the delta expanded it nowadays apparently lives on fishing and birding tourism. Being on the birding side of things I certainly had a species overload for most of the time, there were enough rare ones (to Finland) to keep me guessing. We did two boat trips to different parts, certainly worth it, the main problem being on a fairly fast boat and seeing most birds for a few seconds or less.
We lived in a small hotel with slightly strange architecture but clean and everything worked. Not luxurious but quite adequate. Romanian was no problem as I had enough native speakers around me, three of whom spoke fairly good Finnish and English and when necessary native Hungarian, Szekely origin to be exact. Several other small hotels around and many houses rent rooms. Not unexpectedly fish in many forms was on the menus.
The trip there was slightly strenuous involving plane changes with Lufthansa changing transfer details on the fly and keeping people on the move. After that 4 hours on a car and 45 min on a boat.
Took me a day and a half to recuperate but I guess I would go again if the opportunity arises. Preferably for a bit longer time. All things considered it was a positive experience.
