Crook or Gouge

Im looking to invest in a good craft knife and spoon knife to take into the woods with me and am torn between a crooks knife and gouge.

I want to be able to make spoons and bowls.

any reccomendations to which is better?

A bent gouge will be just fine for spoons but maybe a little on the light side for mugs and bowls. I would go with the crooked knife.

I would advise a hook knife for spoons, but not the cheap frost ones the angles are wrong and they take a lot of grinding to get them any where near sweet (unlike the straight frost knives which are ace). Good hooks generaly cost about £30, svante djarve is OK as are Ben Orfords and hans Karlsons the best are Bo Helgesse. These will do for small bowls but for big bowls you want adzes and gouges.

Mine pretty strong and it comes scary sharp out of the box.

I would perhaps buy the left handed one if I had to choose again as they work on the theory that you cut towards yourself which I'm not too comfortable with.

My frosts knife serves me pretty well, but I can't really compare it to any other hook knives.
