I think your over reading thermometer has come up before during a hot period when your garden was technically the hottest in the land

Well done for checking the neighbour! Both my parents are terrible for not drinking water, the ‘cup of tea’ generation. I went round today with a few lemons and made lemonade. They have Lo-Salt and regular so a bit of each went in the mix.

Bought new thermometers for the garden this spring, as last year my thermometer busted due to the heat.
I have one on a wooden post, facing north under the shade of the apple tree. The other is on a wooden post next to the house, facing north on the north side of the house.
My solar shower heated to the point I needed to add cold water to use, it was so hot! The pond was measured with a jam thermometer which measures the heat of liquids.
Today is cooler , we have quite a stiff breeze and it's delicious!
Went out very early into the garden and let the wind blow on me "all over" blissfull.

I seem to remember that umbrella originally meant “little shade” in Italian.
I think Parasol / Parasole (Against the sun) was originally Italian too.
They’ve always done sun well down there.

The inhabitants of this soggy little island and other Northern Europeans adapted it as a rain guard or parapluie (Against the rain.) in French.

Just a side note: sadetikka translates as rain woodpecker, sadetakki translates as raincoat.

It was actually "cool" this morning between 5am-6am for the first time in weeks ? Months ?. Then as the sun rose above the horizon, it was like standing next to a furnace again. This morning thunderstorms were forecast for this evening, a few hours later, no thunderstorms forecast. Currently 33°C.
The 4th heatwave is on the way according to meteorologists...I have never wanted the weather folks to be so wrong..

The modern Dutch word for an umbrella (for protection against the rain) is "regenscherm".

"Zondek" sounds like it could have been historically a parasol, its meaning e would be something like "sun roof"... Checking this, I found "zonnedek" as an archaic nautical term for an awning to protect sailors on the deck of a ship from the sun. In modern English, we'd call this a "Bimini top".
