On my torso I'm extremely cold sensitive but on my legs I sweat way too much for anything more than pants. Normally I sit with wool but On the odd occasion I need something extra for my legs I much prefer polyester as unlike wool it transfers the sweat away from the skin. I got a couple of pairs of Rothco ECW....whatever they call it long johns and for me they do a brilliant job. Their sizing is a bit odd (I gotta go a size lower than normal) but for the price nothing could beat it yet. Plus they seem to last.

I'm wearing my lined Craghoppers now as I sit at my desk. Far too warm for indoors, but I'm going out later. Unfortunately the forecast cold snap won't be here until later so I'll probably get overheated outdoors. That's what I don't like about lined trousers. So I'll have all the fag of switching back to regular Craghoppers with emptying pockets and refilling, switching belt etc.

Ronhills under Craghoppers are great for extreme British cold if not wet. Long johns never seem to do it for me. On the whole I prefer to wear the warm layer outside rather than under my trousers as I find it easier to adjust the rig when out and about.

I usually carry a pair of cheapo waterproof over trousers in my jacket pocket and they usually do the trick as they keep the wind-chill off and are also useful when walking through wet bracken as well as keeping mud off. I also have a pair of fleece overtrousers which work well in cold, dry conditions such as sitting in a hide.

I think I have more often been bothered by being too hot rather than too cold.

As for the ladies' tights option, I've never tried it myself as I have a very small wife and hers wouldn't fit, but I did have a colleague who complained that her soldier husband always laddered her tight when he went on manouveres. Dunno what the modern army gets up to!
