I have seen a lot of vids on you tube of peoples 'survival tins' and the task of water carry and purification.

Now I do have what I call a 'handy tin' as I know some folk don't like the survival tag in the UK and used to have a condom for the purpose of water carry if needed in some rare situation.

Today I had the thought of using instead one of those bags from the season and shake range. They are folded up real tight but open to a decent size and are ideal for this tin lark. I got one today and it holds well over 2 litres and is quite a strong plastic.

I then thought seeing as though they are meant to go in the oven I would see if I could boil some water in it by holding it over the gas hob high enough so I didn't melt it. I did get the water in the bag hot enough to not to keep my finger dipped in it before I got it too close to the flame and melted the corner.

I now wonder if it is possible to get the water hot enough to kill of the nasties with this method? Yes I could use a puri tab but being able to boil 2 litres of water in a plastic bag that folds up to a postage stamp size would be cool. You could even cook stuff in it over a fire?

Anyone else try this? Will have to get another bag tomorrow and do some more testing!

Steve.

You can boil water in a polythene bag just don't get too close to the flames, best over hot embers. You need to get to 80c to kill off the jimmy jerms, no need to boil unless you are at some altitude.

You can buy normal oven bags from wilko and other supermarkets cheaply and they do packs of ten. I use them in several different kits I love them especially as its hard to get unlubed condoms for me. I also like the pour and store zip lock bags although they do not pack as small. I have yet to try and boil with them but certainly worth a try.

Should be able to boil water in a plastic bag ok, remebering a Physics lesson at school where we were boiling water in various shapes/sizes of 'pots' we made from a sheet of A4 paper!
