There's a patch of bush here about three hundred yards away on the edge of town. It's about a mile long but only a couple hundred yards wide. Pretty well all poplar, willow & alders. Lots of rabbits though!
It snowed a little last night so the tracks are covered but they've been nibbling poplar bark here and there.

isn't the one with the crack a silver birch ?

No, it's a poplar(common name here. Also known as aspen) . In the whole wooded area where the pictures were taken I found only one small cluster of birch. If you google images of poplars for this area you will see that we have two types, with this one being the most common.
