Child sleeping bag recommendations.

Hello good people of BushcraftUK!

I've been looking for a child's sleeping bag and have been rather disappointed by the variety compared to that for adults. I would like 3 season and down fill if possible but this isn't essential. Can anyone recommend a decent bag?

If you don't find what you're looking for you could buy a smallish adult bag to your specs. & fold up the bottom to the required length & secured with something like velcro.......................that's what we did for our little 'un & as the blighters grow you can adjust it & so don't need to but a new bag every year.....................this was only for summer campsite camping though.

Not a bad idea that. To be honest my little'n is only two so I was going to do the same with a junior bag. I'd never thought to do it with a small adult one though. Should work the same but there'd be more choice.

Yep, just use an adult bag and tie it off to suit the length of the child or when glamping just take a quilt.

Personally, I think a two year old wont be warm in an adult bag, as it will be way too wide - lots of spare air to warm up. Plus if my boy is anything to go by little scamp will be wriggling around all night.

On the other hand no point to spend loads as they grow so quick.

Got my boy a child's synthetic bag from Decathalon. Good value for money, and fine for the 6 months of the year he camps....

How old is your young 'Un? Alpkit make a down sleeping bag for kids, I bought one for my son. Unfortunately he's one of those oversized, corn fed kids who grow out of things in 5 minutes and he was too big for it at 8 years old. For a normal sized kid it might do them until they're 10.

My son had a vango bag for the 10 years he needed a child bag [2-12 years]. It survived accidents when he was 2, it survived several cups of hot chocolate, it survived it falling on mud out of hammock, and it survived the washing machine on all those occasions, and kept its loft. It kept him warm camping in snow with a light polyester blanket, it was perfectly warm for most normal british weather. He is the littlest kid in his class, but the bag did him until he could fit an adult bag.

If you go to sweden/norway you will probably get a better bag there, that is more suited to their climate.

Id avoid a down bag for kids. firstly they spill stuff and secondly i found my daughter wriggled so much in her sleep at that age she would end up moving her bag onto the side wall of the tent and pick up condensation. I never got a kids bag, just a narrow fitting adult bag and threw a bungee round where her feet ended. The most important thing is getting the ground insulation right. I always have a ground sheet, a reflective CCF mat and an exped mat on top. If you dont have an exped or are using standard blow up matresses then 2 CCF mats under it will keep them toasty.

We got two of the same make & model so they could be zipped together. Depending on who is there, the kids go in the "double" together sometimes with their mum. So they get the radiated heat from each other, which helps alleviate any oversize issues. We do use liners to minimise the need for washing them.

We have also done a 3 bag set up where one goes underneath and the other two zipped together as a duvet. We haven't make a double liner for that setup yet.
