Otzi the man found in a glacier is dated to 5,300 years ago and he carried with him the charred felt from fomes fomentarius, presumably to act as char to light fires. Does that count as charcloth?

There are records which would suggest that "charcloth" has been used since the 18th century.

The vikings apparently used to char slithers of tenderised horses hoofe fungus in very much the same way as we do charcloth.

This is a good link that talks of many of the different ways of making fire:)

Do you make char-tinder from fungi and other sustances, in exactly the same way as char cloth? As in, in a tin on a fire? Is this the widely accepted method for "charring" ?

If anyone wants to elaborate then that would be very helpful?
