Evening all :)

I've just got my hands on some white poplar logs roughly 8" diameter. Is it any good for carving or should it just go on the firewood pile? I'm dubious as it's such a fast growing timber. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Is white poplar not the same as aspen?
No Populus alba has big sort of maple like leaves green on top and white underneath. White bark with diamond patterns.

Thanks for the info Robin. I'm solid on my i.d. having planted plenty of Aspen (Populus tremula - flat stems), but couldn't find good info on carving.

That's good news as there was a decent sized tree that had been felled and I can get my hands on a bit more. I've carved a fair few spoons but am itching to get started on bowls- just need to get round to building one of your Bowlmates :)
