Can I just check, is your Gransfors large carving axe for left handed people. My understanding is, if you’re right handed, the longer, slightly concave bevel should be on the left side when holding the axe in your right hand with the handle pointing to the floor?

Hello,

I am right handed and it is a right handed axe.

I think that the axe could be used by left handed if you used on the opposite side of the piece of wood you are working on but it wouldn't be its main use, I have a left handed one of these axes (with the bevel on the opposite side) that was sent to me in error (the person claimed it was right handed but it was the opposite) but I have managed to use it right handed before. As I understand from other types of tools it is useful to have the different bevels as they can be used in different situations such as if you cannot change the angle of your work due to space restrictions etc.

I concur with @Slincer89 . I have an axe that shape, I am right handed, it was sold by Woodsmith as right handed, and the axe as shown allows a right handed person to cut very parallel to the wood when hewing downwards. It has less chance of glancing off at low angles.
It is debatable whether this grind is ideal for, say, spoon carving, where I find the ability to pop out small chips with my standard Wildlife and SFA by reducing the angle at which I strike. This limits the cut depth, which can be handy on a spoon. The right hand carving axe bites like a hungry beast!

It’s a hefty axe to be sure and maybe not best suited for spoons being honest but it is possible with some care, it really excels at larger projects and fast removal of waste wood/roughing out.
That being said you can also get some good fine control by choking up on the haft.

That’s the one I have, I was in two minds at the time though, which to get. It’s rather tempting to get the single bevel as well, but I think I’ll hold out for a lighter carving axe to complement the heavy GB one, either the Svante Djarv or the Karkhoff although, the Oscar Rush ones look to be interesting as well.

That Karlson axe is a wicked carver, feels a lot different to GB stuff due to the bevel. A Bargain at this price.

I’m very impressed with it, it came this morning. You can really choke up on the head. Very nice!
