Recently purchased a DLSR camera and I'm looking for a better way of carrying it so that I don't have to drop the rucksack off of my back and take the camera out every time I want to take a picture. Having it swinging around my neck is a pain and not that feasible if you're scrambling over rocks.

What do people use? Chest rig, belt rig? I would be really interested in what people do (other than buy a compact).

Thanks.

5.11 Moab 10 for me, similar style to the Lowepro, just a bit tactical. There's plenty of other sling pack's out there.

I have bought a Black Rapid strap (RS-7 variety) and it is a far superior experience to having a regular strap which tends to give me a sore neck and gets in the way a bit. When you have it on you can barely feel the weight of the camera/lens. The only negative is the price. I doubt anything is particularly good for scrambling over rocks though unless it's tucked away in a bag and well protected.

another convert to the Black rapid system.

I got the replacement screw for my manfrotto quick release plate so it's a moment to unclip the strap and mount the camera on my tripod if needed.

Very comfortable with either my 24-70 or 70-200 although i use the attachment point on the lens collar of the 70-200 to balance the arrangement better

or having re read your post i have a lowepro top loader bag that gives easy access with excellent protection. I tend to take that if i'm just carrying 1 body with 1 lens

I used a swedish gas mask bag for my slr some years back. The bag attached nicely to my bergen hanging under the left arm at waist height. It's made for opening with one yank at the strap for quick access to mask/camera. Misc compartments inside for long lens and batteries etc.
