Car boot find, knife, Any ideas???

Found this at local car boot and thought it would make an excellent knife for battoning due to the full grind. Found it even more interesting when home. It is definately hand forged as the thickness in the full tang is very random. Seems to be mid 19th century and has very short handle made from very thick leather rivetted on with copper rivets much like saddlers use.

Marked with 'R.HAWLEY&SONS SHEFFIELD ENGLAND' and '1848' which I assume is date plus'C1519' and the war dept arrow. blade is 7inch long, 1 3/4 high and 7mm thick at top! Handle is 4 1/2 inch long.

Anyone have any ideas? Thinking it may be a farriors tool?

looks a bit like a putty knife to me, used to chop out old putty from around windows, bash the spine with a hammer and cut the old hard putty out.

Yeah, I agree, haven't seen one cranked like that but then something old like that would be slightly different to current day stuff.

Control and durability... a thinner blade would bur over quicker as it's hit and the weight helps hold it on what it's going to chip out

Thats a proper hacking out knife that! I pretty much grew up with one of these in hand. Nice find.
