Please don't laugh. :p

I'm looking for a day rucksack for a good friend who likes to take his tweed jacket out for walks. He has previously tried something he picked up from marks and sparks and was bitterly disappointed to find out that it was more of a fashion item.

I don't expect a right lot for the money - there's cheap and sometimes there's too cheap. But I am quite prepared to run over a few seams for him and give the whole thing a waxing if it will enable him to tweed up and meander up Mam Tor and come down again with the pack intact. Ideally without him or the pack falling down the mountain...again.

Can someone please advise?

As a day sack for a leisurely ramble over Mam Tor, I suppose it would do... What's he going to put in it? A spare pair of socks and a wooly jumper, a kagoul, a brew kit and snacks? Maybe a small first aid bandage? Bulky items, but not too heavy, it should work just fine. I take it his tweed jacket has a flask pocket, too...

That looks like one of those cheap knock offs. Don't bother spending your hardearned cash on that one. They're pretty useless.

The pack you linked is in fact a new copy made by MFH which is the German equivalent of Web-Tex so your friend may be disappointed with that as well. The old canvas German army mountain bag does get good reviews & there are a few threads about them on the forum. Wayland uses one & I remember he uploaded some pics & a good review somewhere. It's this sort of thing http://www.endicotts.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=92&products_id=2065 There are plenty about both in online surplus stores & ebay, just be sure to get genuine military issue. I think it's a 35 litre bag, 30 litres main body & 2x 2 1/2 litre side pouches.

Room for manoeuvre on retailer? Have you looked at Endicott's?

Under £20 ~ Link . German Mountain pack might have too much plastic for the tweed touch :dunno:

Ah, now those little framed rucksack really do look great, and are a fraction of the cost of the original suggestion!

Just ordered a Swedish Army M39 rucksack, don't know what its going to be like, but thought I would give it a go for days out, dog walking etc. http://www.militarymart.co.uk/index.php?_a=product&product_id=64

looking for a more retro classic look to go with the Bison guide shirt (getting for Christmas) http://www.bisonbushcraft.co.uk/bison_bushcraft_outfitters.htm and Aussie Bush hat. (already got the hat)

Don't know what condition the rucksack will arrive in but suspect the leather will need some TLC does anyone know what I should use to use to sort out the cracked leather that I'm expecting?

Neatsfoot oil worked pretty well on the leather on my M39 pack, I got it from Countrywide Farmers but I guess most Equestrian suppliers would stock it.

I got one of these about a year ago and never had a problem with it although I wasn't happy when it first arrived I soon got used to it , although the shoulder straps are quite thin its still a comfy pack whatever you put in it. Mine has been used for day walks and 3 overnighters, it's now my bugout bag in my car for the winter as my wife bought me a German Army Mountain Pack for my walks.

So def not a waste of money buying this and far from useless, but you get what you pay for sometimes :)
