Camp Stool ! Solution to that sinking feeling sought.......

Hola,

Just returned from a great overnighter with just one 'kit failure' which I'm hoping that the Community on here can help me with.

I was fed up with lugging my 'full-size' folding chair into the woods so bought a cheap three legged folding stool.

It proved to be comfortable, lightweight and compact, however. the plastic feet soon came off and disappeared into the mud, from then on it was a 'sinking experience' as the tubular legs made neat holes into the soft ground.

Having looked on t'interweb it seems that rubber walking stick feet might be a solution, but they do not have a wide / flat profile to stop that sinking feeling. Obviously I need a flat disc on the bottom of each leg which also plugs the hollow leg.

Has anyone any ideas on what I could use? Or bodge? The legs are about 19mm in diameter.

Any (sensible) suggestions? As this is otherwise a good piece of cheap kit.

Lateral thinking and all.... Triangular piece of plywood, small holes drilled to catch the ends of the legs (but not big enough to go through, maybe 2 more small holes to take the hooks of a bungee cord

One end clipped to the wood, taken over the middle where the three legs are connected, the other end clipped onto the other side of wood "plate", holding the two bits together. Does that make sense?

Edit. A bit " Heath Robinson " maybe.

Walking stick rubbers are no good anyway - the stool legs push thru' them in no time.

I gave up on the tripod stool and went for this sort...

Fits nicely down the back of a ruck occupying little space.

Could you not split some wood on site or find a couple or rocks to go under each leg

You need the ferrules that are used on crutches and walking aids - much bigger and more substantial than cheap walking stick ferrules, and designed for safety ( ie not sinking ) under weight; the trick to stopping stuff pushing through the rubber ferrule is to
1. put a washer of the largest diameter that will fit inside ths ferrule before inserting the stick/leg/pole.
2. use a decent epoxy and glue the leg into the ferrule well before you use it; epoxy putty works well for odd shapes.

Could you not just put it on top of a pound store ground sheet? Folded a couple of times it should stop
it from sinking right in and even if it did sink in a bit it would stop the caps from being lost in the mud.

I've done that for a couple of decades but its perhaps too simple a solution

cut a triangular piece of strong waterproof fabric (tent groundsheet type) Make it the size of the three stool feet when apart (erect). Stitch 3 x corner pockets one into each of the three corners on the triangle, so the stool leg feet fit into the pockets. This should spread weight across the ground under the stool and reduce foot sinkage. cheap, recycled & light weight.
