Darrel, conversation about flint knapping and bow making etc are usually in the DIY and traditional crafts forums. There’s quite a bit of conversation about them in there already. The other chatter forum is for…Other chatter that’s not covered by the other forums, or is off topic as in people just want to chat and socialise.

I think the best way forward for more conversation about knapping and bow making is to start off some interesting threads in DIY (if you’re going to be talking about making things) or maybe the Bushcraft and survival skills if you’re talking about using them and the skills based around that.

It would be great to have some more conversation about them as there’s many on here that really like the subjects. I mentioned to you before that we’ve had talk of a bow making forum in the past, that’s still a possibility…start some threads and see how it goes. There’s some serious bow makers on here and some serious knappers, they’ll enjoy the conversation as will those of us that just want to learn more.

Thanks for being enthused :D

Hi Firemaker,
Here in the UK, we're more than a little tied-up in legislation to combine the two skills. We're prohibited from hunting with a bow and so the use of broad-head tipped arrows is frowned upon even for target work (just try buying broad heads anywhere in the UK, nigh on impossible!) We have tournaments of target, clout, field archery etc but, as folk want to get arrows out of target bosses, there is a general acceptance that the target-pile/point is the only type to use. In archery circles, you can make and shoot a broadhead but you're likely to be viewed as a bit of a nutter by the purists. Then taking this further to your suggestion of a knapped flint point, and it all falls down - it would be madness to use such a fragile point against a straw target as it would likely shatter on impact.

I'd love to have the oportunity to hunt with an entirely self-made set up but it's just not done on this side of the pond.
Besides which, if you'd have seen my flintknapping efforts at this summer moot, you'd have understood why I personally don't knapp my own points ;)
