What are we talking here. Button compasses like the old brass ones in survival type kits or just small compasses??

If you're just after a small compass look for a Suunto Clipper B, it's designed to clip to a watch strap, but will just as easily clip to your cuff or the map itself. They have a small bezel with a north pointer on it and the cardinal points on the face of the dial are illuminous so can be seen at night.

They can be purchased from Dive Life with free delivery.

Don't buy the mini compasses from China on eBay they don't work! As for wire try
Picture framing wire or the general purpose wire branded 'black spur' that's in most DIY Shops.
THEY used to sell puritabs in Boots their own brand. I may have a few packs of army puritabs if you want them. I am a boil kinda guy!
