My advice would be to buy a good one to start with - if the knife isn't good quality, then they'll soon be looking to spend all their pocket money on better kit, searching for that ultimate perfect knife, and addicted to the BB forums... 
Although, if you give them a good knife, then they'll learn to appreciate the finer points, know a good knife when they see one, and want to keep themselves informed of the latest and greatest knives... by getting addicted to the BB forums...
