Dear BushcraftUK,
Bushcraft in The Netherlands is getting more popular. Since 2004 we have been organizing the Dutch Bushcraft Weekend every six months and we have seen a steady increase in the number of people that were interested and wanted to come. Last month, three of us started the Dutch Bushcraft Foundation.
The Dutch Bushcraft Weekend
In November 2004 Diederik Pomstra and we organized the first Bushcraft Weekend in The Netherlands with the goal of bringing together people interested in survival and primitive skills. About twenty people attended that first weekend in the woods in Baarn and workshops were organized on flint knapping, tracking, bow drill, trapping and some other skills. There was a very good atmosphere that weekend and it was decided to organize such a weekend every six months. Since then more people got interested and at the upcoming sixth Bushcraft Weekend (31 March - 1 April 2007 in the prehistoric village HAPS in Apeldoorn), we will have seventy people coming over and we have planned twenty seven workshops, including edible plants, hand drill, navigation, foraging, shelter building and primitive cooking. (Many more people signed up for this weekend but the terrain in Apeldoorn can only accommodate seventy).
The Dutch Bushcraft Foundation
In order to deal with these larger numbers, and to create a more professional platform from which to organize bushcraft related activities in this country, three of us started the Dutch Bushcraft Foundation last month. The goal of the foundation is to collect, research and spread bushcraft related knowledge and skills, especially applicable to Northwest Europe. We would like to do this by organizing the Dutch Bushcraft Weekend, workshops and other activities and to promote the exchange of bushcraft related information on the internet and other media. We have just started to collect some bushcraft books and magazines and we have plans for publishing a newsletter. At the coming Dutch Bushcraft Weekend we will brainstorm with the participants on other possible activities.
Bushcraft International
We think BushcraftUK is doing a great job in the UK. We see your website as one of the premier online sources of bushcraft information and we are very impressed by the large community you have built up in such a short time. This message is also to let you know that the bushcraft spirit has also awakened in The Netherlands and that we are open to any international bushcraft activities that may develop in the future. In our opinion, looking over the borders will only stimulate the exchange of knowledge and skills on the subject we all love, so let's stay in touch and see you in the woods!
Regards,
Rob Hofman, Anneke Treep and Marc Smeehuijzen.
