Good Afternoon All,

We started back up with scouts last night with some new guys coming up to explorers and when we asked what they wanted to do a lot of them showed interest in a survival type weekend. As a unit we have tarps and doss bags up the wazoo but we're limited on knives and small saws. Does anyone know where we might source a dozen knives and saws? Something along the lines of the lap-knife set by bahco or similar.

Kind regards,

Ollie

Ollie - our Explorer Unit loves heading out in hammocks too - we did a very competitive group purchase deal (albeit quite a few years back now!) with DD hammocks for a whole load of their basic 'scout hammocks'. Appreciate that this is a tangent to your original question (and of course, that you might already have a load@ - but if not, they do add a little adventure to things, and a nice transition up/change from what they have done in the scout section.

The Mora clippers are of course the classic group knives, but in recent years we have transitioned to hultafors - they are largely comparable in quality, and a lot cheaper than the Moras (even with the most favorable group discount). We have a few Bahco laplanders, but find that 3 or 4 within the unit is more than enough (tip - tie a long length of florescent cord to the saws, and buy knives with bright handles, otherwise the Explorers will be garunteed to lose 2 or 3 every weekend away - which gets very expensive...)

We bought a load of Mora Craftsman knives from Clas Ohlson, don’t know if they are still operating over here.
They were about £3 each and are almost identical to the more expensive Morakniv, but have a ruler on the blade.
We used them to teach sharpening as well as knife skills as I could quickly sort out the blade once the Cubs and scouts had spent time sharpening them.

A quick google found this which is similar

Or this one if you are point averse
