This just happened to my firesteel. :(

It's still fine to use, just a little shorter, anyway, any-one else have this or a similar problem?

By the looks of it, snapping was inevitable. Maybe next time try changing how you strike, looks like you'll have practice now it's shorter!

My GFs son dropped his brand new Scout model firesteel onto my kitchen floor, snap, and he had two pieces. Good for practising with. and no,it wasn't a stone floor or anything like that, I guess they're just brittle.

I believe that this model / size is good for 10,000 or so strikes. I have had for approx 1 year so I would guess i must have had a good few thousand. Althought the end has snapped it is still very useable and I imagine I will get plenty more strikes from the old boy yet.

The reason the end did snap is due to me shaving (not sparking) the steel towards the bottom and allowing a small pile of the material to fall onto my tinder. I would then give it a full blown strike to make sparks fall onto the shavings and tinder and then "BOOM" you get a magnified ignition which is more reliable than just a standard strike and flame should follow.

Hope that makes sense  .
