I recently purchased a set of softie trousers and top and am loving them in this cold weather.
I am 5' 10" with 36" waist and I normally buy things in large so did this with the softies. They seem rather puffy and I keep breaking out into song.....Hammertime whoa whoa whoa whoa whoop whoop Hammertime!!lol

Are they meant to be like this or should I have gone for the medium?

I think i got large, am 6'2", bout 38 waist, mine arent quite as baggy round the ankles as that, I wear them under m65 over trousers. Well I did until I bought some massif us air force softshells, now dont use these.

I'm 5'9" with a 34-36in waist (it depends on how honest I'm with myself...), and the small is pretty baggy, but the waist size is OK. Fine to wear around camp, etc, but they are designed to go over everything, so they are relatively huge.

Signed for them twice, saved me buying a pair of buffalo salopettes?. Issued kit has come along way, from the quilted jacket/waistcoat mits trousers of the chairman Mao suit.

Yes, I would have gone for the Medium, they fit much better on my 34" waist 32" inner leg frame. They are made to fit over your clothing as an additional outer layer which is why they are so big.
Hope this helps,
Phil

Ah thanks, didn't realise they are meant as over trousers. Come to think about it, I don't suppose sqaddies on ops have the luxury of stripping down to their undercrackers before donning the softies!

Which is why most of the ones you see on sale are large and above. Same goes for the jackets. I got my jacket the other day in a charity shop for £8.99 (the trousers were £15 from the local surplus place), and even though I assume that its a small, its about the same length as a full length hiking jacket. There is a XS size, but they are like pixie dust - just try and find one.
In a perfect world, I'd have a Patagonia down sweater, Rab Microlight or a Montane Prism, but it will do for now! The rumour is that the US equivalent of the trousers is made by Patagonia...

If you un zip them, lay them flat, its possible to zip them back up with the legs shorter than the waist !, my lad did it with his, & I'm laughing now at the thought of it. Now that realy will look like "hammer time".
