I have a pair of DPM camo British Army ECW Mittens. They are fully waterproof, appear to be breathable and thin. They have a leather and finger/thumb area.

I wear them over a pair of warm boiled (claimed to be merino) wool gloves for commuting by bike on snow/frosty days. They do the job well.

Oddly, the mittens are labelled as "Inner".

Were these actually intended to be worn with some sort of "outer" mitten?

Thanks

They are like this:

The outters are Goretex and have grippy dots on the palm, all parts of the layering system.

Do they have any additional insulation? It seems odd to have two similar membrane mittens. The inner mittens appear to be fully waterproof and breathable. I use them as outer mittens.

I have just seen some references to the outer mittens on the www. They are longer and don't have the leather palms.

For UK use, the inners plus warm wool underneath are more than sufficient.

Those British overmitts are really good value, sizewise they fall between my OR types, a bit bigger than the Adrenaline mitten shells and smaller than the Mt Baker overmitten shell.
An XL will fit over my HighCamp trigger finger in XL for a really warm combo, for something less bulky go down a size and simply wear over your favourite winter glove

I have a set as a shell for my normal gloves. Although I still have a pair of Dachstien mitts somewhere.

You can see one of the MOD inner mittens on the right of this picture. Wool fleece and very warm.

In practice, I use the overmittens as a barrier layer over a pair of gloves like the Hestra pair you can see here.
As per my original query, the "inner mittens" are actually MVP mittens with leather palms.

The fleecy ones are presumably "inner inner mittens".

Having two nominally similar layers of MVP mittens is surprising. The outer ones appear to be less grippy and longer than the inner ones that have fleecy inners inside them.

Nice collection. What are the mittens with Gore-Tex labels? And the woven item at the top, is that a leash for your mittens? I really like that.

The goretex mittens are German or Austrian I think. Unlined so they will go over the wool fleece mittens. I sewed the fleece backing on to clean goggles with and the braid was just decorative.

The braided leather strap is a leash but it has glaciated ends to stop it hanging too low and catching on stuff.
