Bonded Polyester/Bonded Nylon (20s/40s/60s) What are the NNs numbers?

Hi,

I'm looking at bonded nylon/polyester thread and I just can't work out what the NNs sizes mean? I know what they relate to in terms of Tex but I just can't work out what the 20s, 40s, 60s numbers mean?

I understand the NNs relates to the size/weight of the thread but I can't work out what system this is?

As far as I know
20s = TEX138
40s = TEX70
60s = TEX45

Denier is the weight in grams for 9000 metres of a thread
Tex is the weight in grams for 1000 metres of a thread

Just what do the NNs numbers relate to?

I think(!) I have worked it out finally.

These numbers are ticket numbers and is a metric system which denotes the length of thread which weighs 3grams - how bizarre

So, the higher the number, the finer the thread

TKT = 1000/TEX*3

1000/138*3 = 21.74 (20s)
1000/70*3 = 42.86 (40s)
1000/45*3 = 66.67 (60s)

Well actually, no!!! I've tried before to sort those number out in my head but to no avail. I've found that my machine loves 40's and I'm sticking with that.

Me too, I have been using 40s also with 110/18 needles - but seen a few references to 60s so wondered about dropping down to a 100/16 needle with 60s thread, perhaps for the lighter projects.

I think perhaps I was just getting a bit rainman over the numbers!

Know what you mean about the numbers.

I really want a thicker thread perhaps a 35's but I don't know the tkt or tex number for it Cheers
